Gualdo del Re firmly believes in the expression of terroir in its wines. Varietal expression is combined with the winemaker’s ability to draw a consistent narration that embodies the winery’s identity.
Barbara Tamburini, an internationally acclaimed winemaker awarded as the Best Italian Winemaker by the Fondazione Italiana Sommelier in 2019, has been guaranteeing this delicate process of conformity since 2000.
The pursuit of a Tuscan identity, even in international grape varieties, is the key to her philosophy, which combines experimentation and tradition in the interest of a distinct sensibility to pleasure. The bond with the territory is founded on the awareness of the exceptional qualitative potential of Suvereto, where Barbara Tamburini operates in the name of purity. Merlot and Sangiovese, Vermentino and Pinot Bianco, as well as Pinot Nero and Aleatico yield distinct and elegant monovarietal wines endowed with aromatic complexity and structure, without disregarding the pleasure of a full and enjoyable drink.

Barbara Tamburini is one of the most esteemed winemakers in Italy, capable of combining a profound theoretical knowledge of wine with a strong practical sensibility, which drives her to go to the vineyard every day and step up her game. A pupil of Vittorio Fiore, she has been working with Gualdo del Re since 2000, driven by an attitude of constant research and experimentation. She is the mind behind the intuition to vinify I’Rennero as a pure Merlot starting from the 2000 vintage, unveiling its outstanding qualities.
Her research on Pinot Nero for her dissertation entitled “Valorizzazione del vitigno Pinot nero in Val di Cornia” (Valorization of Pinot Nero in Val di Cornia) recounts the rise of this grape in Suvereto, uncommon for the territory, and then its inclusion among the cultivars authorized in the province of Livorno.
In 2015, Barbara Tamburini was crowned the «Queen of Merlot»: the only winemaker in the world to get seven of her wines (including five different vintages of I’Rennero) to the top of Mondo Merlot for five consecutive editions.
