Winegrowing
Stones, sands and red soils

Gualdo del Re cultivates about 27 hectares of vineyards in Notri, just south of the historic town of Suvereto, where the Cornia River glides between the first ridges of the Metalliferous Hills, giving rise to the homonymous valley.
A single unit of vineyards that, following soil analysis and attentive agronomic choices, has been divided into two distinct areas dedicated to red and white grape varieties, respectively.
The southern part of the vineyards, the one overlooking the river, is made up of light and loose soils of alluvial origin. This area is dedicated to the cultivation of white grapes – Vermentino and Pinot Bianco – which are characterized by freshness, intense aromas and exceptional complexity.
The northern section, fruit of the Metalliferous Hills, has typical reddish soils that contain stone, clay and silt. These are ideal soils for the cultivation of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, which acquire a particularly noble and fascinating character, thanks to the unique aromas and structure. This is the location of the vineyards that give rise to two Supertuscans: I’Rennero, an award-winning 100% Merlot, andCabraia, made from Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Suvereto
Between the coast and the Apeninnes
Suvereto is the southernmost winegrowing area in the province of Livorno: a natural amphitheater surrounded by the Metalliferous hills that form Val di Cornia.

FOR A BALANCED VITICULTURE
Neither too much, nor too little
Gualdo del Re applies the principles of organic cultivation to its vineyards, striving to find the perfect balance between varietal expressiveness and productive capacity.
In the field, all operations are carried out with the utmost respect for the vine. Plant density, counting about 6,000 plants/hectare, together with careful management of greenery and the rational practice of thinning, lead to a balanced plant yield: neither too much, nor too little. This is a commitment to vegetative balance that favors the full maturation of the grape bunches in perfect harmony with the warm and dry climate of Suvereto, bringing some cultivars to early ripening and requiring perfect harvest timing, variety by variety, vineyard by vineyard.

«The vine is a naturally generous plant. Our duty is to harmonize its innate vocation to the winemaking goals we want to achieve».
Barbara Tamburini
