About
Proudly Tuscan

In 2022, Gualdo del Re opened a new chapter in its history: the estate was acquired by Mauro Gestri, an entrepreneur from Pistoia.
The transition occurred whilst continuing along the path of excellence undertaken by Barbara Tamburini who, in the meantime, has become one of the most famous and recognised enologists in Italy and abroad.
The new business development program includes the restoration of some vineyards and the purchase of new plots. The recently acquired plots would be planted with massal selections of traditional varieties that resulted from extensive studies and analysis.
At the same time, modernization was organized for Il Ristorante, Il Casale and, especially, the Cellar, whose technical unit would be employed for a wider vineyard rationalization.

Mauro Gestri
An entrepreneur and avid wine lover, Mauro Gestri is a Tuscan native hailing from Pistoia. His land of origin and its millenary winemaking tradition have called Mauro and his wife Barbara back to Tuscany after a long period abroad. The acquisition of Gualdo del Re in 2022 has fulfilled their dream of returning to the roots.
The Gestri family has launched an ambitious project involving the renovation and development of the winery, including significant investment in the production facilities, the expansion of the vineyards, and the development of hospitality.
The cellar has been entrusted entirely to winemaker Barbara Tamburini, placing her at the helm of winemaking operations with the task of innovating and developing the potential of Gualdo del Re wines while respecting sustainability and quality.
History
In the name of continuity
Gualdo del Re was established in Suvereto in 1953 as a mixed farm. Vines, olives and cereals were cultivated, but wine production was meant for domestic consumption.
It was not until the 1980s that the company took its first steps towards specialization: international varieties (namely Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a few rows of Pinot Nero) were planted alongside more traditional ones such as Sangiovese, Vermentino and Aleatico.
The arrival of Barbara Tamburini in 2000 marked the beginning of a new phase. The young and recently graduated enologist organized production based on rational and experimental methods. These safeguarded the purity of the vines in monovarietal labels that are capable of directly embodying the characteristics of a territory endowed with remarkable expressive potential and vocation to international and native grape varieties.
Thus rose Gualdo del Re, the full and identifying expression of Sangiovese from Suvereto. The company crus were created: I’Rennero, 100% Merlot with an austere character and great potential for evolution, and Cabraia, a blend of mostly Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The «forest» of the King
Gualdo comes from an ancient word of Lombard origin – wald – which means «forest». This is a quite common toponym in Maremma where trees and forests ruled, descending from the Apennines, and invading the coasts. According to ancient documentation, Re refers to the conqueror of Central Italy: the Lombard king Agilulf. After ascending to the throne, in 591 A.D., he expanded his kingdom up to the boundaries of territories owned by the Church, conquering Populonia, Bagnoregio and, finally, Orvieto.
